As Polaris, the guiding star of earth, illuminates the planet with visible light, East Carolina College radiates educational light. An observer sees not only the source of the light but also the area illumined. The Polaris shines in four distinct directions: academic, cultural, social, and physical. Not the least brilliant of the four beams is the academic. Prerequisite to commencement, the academic disciplines are often thought to end with graduation. Knowledge gained here, however, will go with each student into his fu- ture life; and a shaft of light from East Carolina is sent out as each student takes his place in the world. The radiance of culture does not begin and end with the campus but reflects in the community and on the whole of eastern North Carolina. Her Life
Born on January 27, , to the late Ruby and Major Cameron,Shirleywas a beacon of strength, love, and compassion. She dedicated her life to her family, raising her two sons, Onquah Henry and Onuka Henry, while providing endless support to those around her.
Shirley accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. A proud member of the first graduating class of Rosa A. Temple High School in , she later retired from Midd-West Janitorial Services, where she supervised the cleaning staff who provided services for Waterways Experiment Station.
Known forherexceptional cooking,Shirleylovingly prepared meals while listening to her favorite blues. Friends and family eagerly gathered for her Sunday feasts. She also enjoyed dancing the Cha-Cha, solving crossword puzzles
