  • Teaching History Beyond the Classroom with Chris Lese

I love speaking with my fellow high school teachers - and I am thrilled to have such an inspiring educator on the show. Chris and I have collaborated in the past, and I am looking forward to some upcoming projects - we talk about those AND how he gets his students actively engaged both in and out of the classroom. You'll want to listen especially to Chris's experiences with a Rogue Historian alum - Joe McGill...kind of a once in a lifetime thing. We discuss (among other things):

    • Technology and social media in the classroom

    • The performative aspects of teaching

    • Field trips!!!!

    • Teachers Regiment - Civil War and Memory on Facebook

Chris offers some great advice for students...and I know you are listening out there - so pay attention :) And...one last thing. Chris recommends one of my all-time favorite books, Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War by Tony Horwitz

As an actor you don’t always have a lot of control over a story and I wanted to have more of a say. That’s why I also started writing, which I enjoyed very much. When I had three or four scripts under my belt, I had to figure out how to get them made into a movie. Because unfortunately it’s not like Steven Spielberg comes knocking on your door, offering to turn your script into a film! So I learned how to produce as well. I made a short film called Harvest in 2003, just as 24p MiniDV video cameras were hitting the scene. We shot a period piece set in 1953 in 4 days! After that I produced and directed furniture commercials, among other things, and ke
