Geoff Joseph Nicholson (4 March – 18 January ) was a British novelist and non-fiction writer.[1]
Life and career
[edit]Geoff Joseph Nicholson was born in Hillsborough, Sheffield on 4 March [2][3] He studied English at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and Modern European Drama at the University of Essex.
He was generally regarded as a satirist in the tradition of Evelyn Waugh,[4] his writing also being compared favorably with that of Kinsgley and Martin Amis, Jonathan Coe,[5]Will Self and Zadie Smith.[6] The main themes and features of his books included leading characters with major obsessions, sexual and otherwise (guitars, Volkswagens, women's feet and shoes), interweaving storylines and hidden subcultures and societies. His books usually contained a lot of black humour. He also wrote several works of non-fiction and many short stories. His novel Bleeding London was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize.
His travelogue Day Trips to the Desert was read on Radio 4 by Bill Nighy.
His novel What We Did on Our Holidays was made into the film Permanent Vacation, featuring David Carradine, directed by W. Scott Peake.[7][8& • He was educated at Downside School and Christ’s College, Cambridge, and then joined BBC Television, where he worked as a documentary film maker. There his ambition to write, directed first into novels, was channeled into television drama. His plays for television include Shadowlands and Life Story, both of which won the BAFTA Best Television Drama award in their year; other award-winners were Sweet As You Are and The March . In he received the Royal Television Society’s Writer’s Award. His first play, an adaptation of Shadowlands for the stage, was Evening Standard Best Play of , and went on to a Tony Award winning run on Broadway. He was nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay of the film version, which was directed by Richard Attenborough and starred Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. Since then his film credits include: Sarafina, Nell, First Knight, Grey Owl , Gladiator (as co-writer, for which he received a second Oscar nomination), Elizabeth: the Golden Age, Les Miserables, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Unbroken, and Everest. He has written and directed his own film, Firelight; and four further stage plays, Map of the Heart, Katherine Howard, The Retreat from Moscow (which William Nicholson was born in , and grew up in Sussex and Gloucestershire.
