Laurence John Fishburne III[1] (born July 30, 1961) is an American actor.[a] Throughout his career, he has gained recognition for his roles on stage and screen, and militant and authoritative characters. He gained popularity after appearing in the films Apocalypse Now (1979) and Boyz n the Hood (1991) and later on became known for his roles in The Matrix franchise (1999–2003) and the John Wick film series (2017–present).

At the age of 10, Fishburne appeared in his first play, In My Many Names and Days, at a little theatre space in Manhattan and was cast by legendary screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola in Apocalypse Now, aged 14. A wide-ranging career followed, with highlights including Boyz ‘n the Hood and being the first black actor to play the part of Shakespeare’s Othello on film in 1995.
