Somerville helped shape Devils hockey chairman & managing partner Jeffrey Vanderbeek
SOMERVILLE — In a way, N.J. Devils chairman and managing partner Jeffrey Vanderbeek started his career in ice hockey in Somerville.
Born and raised here, Vanderbeek, 52, remembers playing the game with friends on a frozen Peters Brook, using a rock as a puck.
He now sits in a corner office at the new Prudential Center in Newark, which in 2007 he helped establish as the home for New Jersey’s hockey team, but he still fondly remembers his time in Somerville, his childhood love for sports and the values he gained from growing up here.
“I couldn’t think of a better place to grow up,” he said.
Vanderbeek spent the first 12 years of his life in Somerville, living on Spring Street and attending Central School on High Street before it was knocked down, an “old-fashioned school house” with “big blackboards” and “good playgrounds,” he said. In his school years here and at Bridgewater-Raritan East, where he went to high school, he went out for football, basketball, track and baseball.
A smile comes to Vanderbeek’s face as he recalls events on Main Street during his childhood. His grandfather owned a beauty salon on Main Street, and during the Tour of Somerville, he remembers setting up folding

Somerset County football has added some professional flavor this fall, and it might be exactly what a couple of struggling teams need to inject some life back into their programs.

Now former Giants Super Bowl champion Rich Seubert has been elevated to head coach at Watchung Hills, and the former owner of the three-time Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils, Jeff Vanderbeek, is taking the solo reins at Somerville after serving as co-head coach last season.
Perhaps under the tutelage of a couple of guys who reached the peak of their professions, their respective high school programs can be guided back up the varsity football mountain.
